THE NEW ALTERNATIVE

SHORT RUN PUBLISHING HAS COME OF AGE!

Prior to about 1995, for most aspiring, want-to-be authors book publishing was mostly a wistful dream.
Major publishing houses accepted less than 1% of proposed manuscripts.  The alternative then was
"vanity" publishers or self-publishers who charged thousands of dollars to bypass the gatekeepers of
the major houses and get a book into print.

With the advent of short-run publishing or on-demand publishing, the whole world of publishing was
turned on its head.  In the past a major publisher reports that every year they rejected over 30,000
unsolicited book proposals.  Today there are over 5 million manuscripts floating around looking for a
publisher--at a 1% acceptance rate, the cruel and disheartening truth is that if you are waiting for your
acceptance letter, it in all probability is not coming.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED AND SO HAS THE PRINTING INDUSTRY...

Random House is quoted as saying, "We're always watching what is going on with self-publishers.  We
always ask our reps to keep their eyes open."

Simon and Schuster note that "every single publisher is on the lookout for self-publishers."

The News York Times notes that "Now its very frequent for mainstream houses to go prospecting
among the self-published books to make them their own."

Newsday notes, "Self-publishing has become a legitmate method of getting into print as libraries and
even bookstore superchains are opening their shelves to the growing number of entrepreneurial
writers."

J
UST RECENTLY IT WAS REPORTED THAT 1 OUT OF EVERY 10 BOOKS PUBLISHED LAST YEAR
WAS SELF-PUBLISHED!

In the past, self-publishing was often poor quality as well as as prohibitively expensive, complicated
and frustrating.  Today getting a contract with a traditional publisher is next to unlikely--someone has
said that you have a better chance of winning a lottery.  And if you did get that coveted letter of
acceptance, you would give up the rights to your book, as well as the content and design.  On top of
that , it would take you about two years after acceptance to see the fruits of your labor actually in print.
